Lions Global Causes
The LCI (Lions Clubs International) focuses on several key global causes to address significant challenges facing communities worldwide. These 8 causes guide the service activities of Lions and Leos, promoting humanitarian efforts and community support.
Lions Club Savonranta is part of the worldwide “Lions Clubs International”, and as part of that organisation, we focus directly and indirectly on the global causes in our service. These are: Childhood Cancer, Diabetes, Disaster Relief, Environment, Humanitarian Efforts, Hunger, Vision and Youth.
Cause
Description
Childhood Cancer

Support for children and families affected by cancer, including funding for hospices and care.
According to World Health Organization, over 1,000 children are diagnosed with cancer every day.
While childhood cancer can be treatable, the outcome often depends on the child’s access to the
proper resources and healthcare. Nonetheless, it is a devastating journey for families.
Since cancer impacts many children and their families, Lions all over the world have found unique
ways to support families facing this terrible journey.
Diabetes

Initiatives to raise awareness and provide resources for diabetes prevention and management.
Diabetes Grants fund large-scale diabetes projects to improve the public health of a community and provide equitable access to services. Projects that serve high-risk, under-served and marginalized populations are encouraged. Lions should partner with local diabetes organizations or medical facilities to plan and implement projects.
Diabetes is a chronic (long-lasting) health condition that affects how your body turns food into energy.
There are three main types of diabetes: type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes (diabetes while pregnant).
Disaster Relief

Immediate response to natural disasters, providing aid and support for recovery efforts.
Whenever and wherever disaster strikes, Lions are among the first to respond, bringing aid, comfort, and hope to those in need. Whether it’s natural disasters like floods, earthquakes, wildfires, or humanitarian crises, Lions step forward with their unique blend of community care and action.
When disaster strikes, the rapid and coordinated response of Lions Clubs saves lives and restores hope. Whether it’s a typhoon in the Philippines, wildfires in Australia, earthquakes in Turkey, or flooding in Nigeria, Lions mobilize immediately with relief supplies, volunteers, and financial assistance.
Environment

Projects aimed at environmental conservation, including tree planting and educational programs.
Tree Planting and Tree Care Environmental Cleanup and Restoration Recycling and Waste Management Environmental Awareness, Education and Advocacy Clean Water and Sanitation
Improve your community through the planting of locally appropriate tree seedlings or saplings, contributing to cleaner air and a healthier environment.
Protect nature and habitats by cleaning debris and shielding pollutants from harming ecosystems, marine life, and the community.
Conserve resources and reduce waste to minimize adverse impacts on sustainability.
Raise awareness of the importance of protecting the environment, educate your community members, and create positive change.
Ensure safe water and adequate sanitation for all, promoting better health outcomes around the world.
Humanitarian Efforts

Support for global humanitarian crises, including refugee assistance and community rebuilding.
Hunger

Efforts to combat food insecurity through food donations and community meal programs.
Lions support vital initiatives such as school feeding programs, food banks and feeding centers, ensuring that those in need receive the nourishment they require.
Food insecurity continues to plague over 800 million people globally. Malnutrition and hunger remain critical barriers to development, particularly in vulnerable regions affected by poverty, displacement, or conflict. Lions Clubs International has long made it a priority to fight hunger by organizing food drives, distributing meals, supporting community pantries, and promoting sustainable agriculture.
Vision

Programs to prevent blindness and provide eye care services, including eyeglass recycling.
The LCIF Vision supports Lion-led service activities that fight blindness and preventable vision loss and/or assist people who are blind and visually impaired in underserved communities.
Eighty percent of all visual impairment can be prevented or cured. The first step to prevention is awareness. The second is early detection through vision screening.
Lions have recognized the urgent need for corrective lenses and collect usable glasses in their communities to support eyeglass recycling.
Youth

Support for youth development through educational programs and community service opportunities.
LCIF improves access to quality education, vital health services, and positive youth development for young people around the world. Lions Quest, LCIF’s signature youth education program, is a social emotional learning curriculum which gives students the skills to navigate life and prevent bullying and substance abuse.
Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) is proud to be a founding member of The Choose Kindness Alliance, a coalition of the nation’s leading nonprofit organizations championing bullying prevention, intentional inclusion, and youth mental wellness.
The impact of Lions Clubs
Lions Clubs International has over 1.4 million members worldwide, actively engaging in these causes through local clubs like the Lions Club Savonranta. Their mission is to empower volunteers to serve their communities and meet humanitarian needs, fostering peace and understanding globally.
